Program details
Overview
The Early Childhood Education Certificate develops the core competencies needed for working with young children and supporting their families within licensed childcare settings, in line with BC's Early Childhood Educator Registry requirements. The program is structured for students who are already employed in childcare, allowing them to continue working while completing the credential.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Early Childhood Education Certificate (Full-Time) requires BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent) for domestic applicants, or 19 years of age or older as an alternative; international applicants need BC Grade 12 graduation or equivalent. English proficiency is assessed under Langara's Category 3 standard: English Studies 12 / English First Peoples 12 / Literary Studies 12 at 50%, IELTS Academic 6.5, Duolingo English Test 110, TOEFL iBT 80 (Writing 20, Reading 20, Listening 18, Speaking 18), CAEL 60, or PTE Academic 56. Applicants must attend a mandatory information session, submit two letters of reference written within one year of application, hold a current First Aid certificate from an approved program, and complete a Criminal Records Review before registration. Applicants need 20 hours of volunteer or paid work in a licensed childcare centre with children six years old and under; babysitting alone does not satisfy this requirement. Admission to the program does not guarantee registration in every required course, and some students may need additional English coursework to meet program prerequisites.
