Overview
The Education Assistant Certificate is a mix of theory and practical experience about best ways to support children and youth with special needs in the school setting. The program will provide you with the opportunity to become a competent and employable paraprofessional and excel in inclusive classrooms. You will receive hands-on experience alongside teachers and teams supporting students with disabilities. The program includes two extended practicum experiences in local schools. Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Education Assistant Certificate requires BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent) for domestic applicants, or 19 years of age or older as an alternative; international applicants need BC Grade 12 graduation or equivalent, and preference may be given to applicants with prior post-secondary study carrying a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. English proficiency is assessed under Langara's Category 2 standard: English 12 at 70%, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band under 6.0, Duolingo English Test 110, TOEFL iBT 88 (Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking each at 20), CAEL 70 with no band under 60, or PTE Academic 56 with no skill below 55. Applicants need recent experience working with children or adolescents, preferably a minimum of 50 hours paid or volunteer, backed by two recent letters confirming that experience, and must complete an interview with program faculty on the role of an education assistant. A Criminal Record Check is required before the first practicum. Admission is competitive, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
