Overview

Applied Science for Engineering is a diploma intended for students who want to pursue engineering study but have not yet met the prerequisites, or who need time to adjust to the workload engineering requires. Coursework builds a grounding in mathematics and the natural sciences, developing laboratory practice and technical communication skills, and introduces Canadian engineering practice, history, social context, and the case-study and design principles used in engineering. Diploma students who qualify are guaranteed a place to complete their remaining 40 credits in the Engineering Transfer Certificate class.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to the Applied Science for Engineering Diploma requires BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent) for domestic applicants, or 19 years of age or older as an alternative, plus a minimum 'B' in Chemistry 11 (or equivalent), or a minimum 'C' in Chemistry 11 together with a minimum 'C' in Chemistry 12; a minimum 'B' in Physics 11 (or equivalent) or a minimum 'C' in Physics 12; and a minimum 'C' in Precalculus 12, with preference given to applicants holding a 'C+' or higher. Non-BC or post-secondary equivalencies are evaluated by the department chair. English proficiency is assessed under Langara's Category 3 standard: English Studies 12 / English First Peoples 12 / Literary Studies 12 at 50%, IELTS Academic 6.5, Duolingo English Test 110, TOEFL iBT 80 (Writing 20, Reading 20, Listening 18, Speaking 18), CAEL 60, or PTE Academic 56. The diploma has a single September intake, with an application deadline of May 15; admission to the program does not guarantee registration in every required course.
