Overview
The Design Formation Diploma is a two-year, multidisciplinary foundation design program that prepares you for further specialized studies or entry-level jobs in fields ranging from visual merchandising to event, graphic, or interior design. The curriculum incorporates fundamentals of architecture and interior design, graphic design, and experiential design. In this multidisciplinary program, you will develop a wide-ranging skill set that can be applied to everything from retail display to exhibit design to environmental graphic design, or used as a basis for further study in design. Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Design Formation Diploma requires BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent) for domestic applicants, or 19 years of age or older as an alternative; international applicants need BC Grade 12 graduation or equivalent. Attendance at a mandatory program information session is required before applying. English proficiency is assessed under Langara's Category 2 standard: English 12 at 70%, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band under 6.0, Duolingo English Test 110, TOEFL iBT 88 (Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking each at 20), CAEL 70 with no band under 60, or PTE Academic 56 with no skill below 55. Applicants submit a portfolio and relevant work samples and complete a mandatory interview with program faculty assessing their ability to communicate verbally, visually and in writing; preference may be given to applicants who have completed secondary-school or equivalent art courses. No minimum GPA is set, and admission to the program does not guarantee registration in every required course.

International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC portal but face fixed closing dates: 30 September 2026 for Spring 2027, 31 January 2027 for Summer 2027 and 31 May 2027 for Fall 2027. A short list of limited-enrolment programmes - Nursing, Advanced Entry BSN, Nursing Practice in Canada, Applied Science for Engineering and the Post-Degree Diploma in Data Analytics - set their own, earlier deadlines that apply to both applicant types. Admission is otherwise rolling. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
