Overview
Pre-Electrician Certificate is a 15-week program for students with no prior electrical trades experience who plan to write the First Period Alberta Apprenticeship exam. Coursework covers foundational electrical theory, workplace safety, and tool use, building the base skills expected of a first-period electrical apprentice. Lectures, labs, and hands-on training take place on campus in Lethbridge, with some coursework delivered online. The program does not include a co-op or practicum placement. It is offered at Lethbridge Polytechnic to domestic students only; it is not open to international applicants. Intakes run in September and February. Non-academic entry expectations include the physical ability to lift objects over 25 kilograms, mechanical aptitude, good hearing and colour vision, and the ability to work as part of a team. Graduates are prepared to enter first-period electrical apprenticeship with employers in the trade.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet Lethbridge Polytechnic's general admission requirements, plus successful completion of English 20-2, Math 20-3, and Science 10, or a pass on the Apprenticeship Entrance Exam, or a passing mark in all five Canadian General Education Development (GED) tests. Non-academic requirements include the ability to lift objects over 25 kilograms, mechanical aptitude, good hearing and colour vision, and the ability to work as part of a team.
