Program details

Overview

The Powerline Technician Apprenticeship is a three-year Red Seal trade program preparing apprentices for hands-on careers in the power industry. The program includes 630 hours of classroom instruction in total, with apprentices spending seven weeks each year on campus focused on theory and the remainder of the year working on the job with a qualified journeyperson. Delivery is face-to-face on Lethbridge Polytechnic's main campus. Applications for apprenticeship and industry training are submitted through Alberta's MyTradesecrets portal, and apprentices must be registered with an employer to progress through the three levels of training. On completing the program and passing the Red Seal interprovincial examination, graduates receive certified Journeyman papers, recognized across Canada. The credential qualifies graduates to work as powerline technicians constructing and maintaining electrical transmission and distribution systems. The program is not open to international students, since it requires concurrent employment with an Alberta-registered training employer throughout its three years.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: English 20-1 or 20-2 (or equivalent), Math 20-1, 20-2, or 20-3 (or equivalent), and Science 10 (or equivalent). Applicants without these courses may qualify with passing marks on all five GED/CAEC tests or by successfully completing the Apprenticeship Entrance exam. Applications are submitted through the MyTradesecrets portal. No minimum grade point average or English-language proficiency score is stated.
