The PhD in Mining Engineering is offered by the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering. It is McGill's oldest mining program, founded in 1871, and is research-intensive, covering stochastic mine planning, mineral economics, mine reliability and asset management, geomechanics, mine design, and numerical modelling. Students spend most of their time conducting original research, with some coursework also required. The program develops skills in literature review, statistical analysis, and research dissemination. Graduates pursue careers in mining operations, finance, consultancy, heavy equipment manufacturing, research institutions, and government agencies. The program admits students in the Fall, Winter, and Summer terms.
