NAIT's Magnetic Resonance Imaging, 2nd Discipline programme is a post-diploma certificate for practising healthcare professionals who already hold a diploma in medical radiography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, ultrasound (diagnostic medical sonography) or combined laboratory and X-ray, and who want to add MRI as a second discipline. MRI technologists work alongside physicians, nurses and other medical staff to produce diagnostic images using strong magnetic fields and radio waves rather than ionizing radiation. The programme builds on the student's existing diagnostic-imaging background, covering MRI physics, safety protocols, patient care and image-acquisition techniques. Delivery is part-time and online, combining MRI simulation software with a 15-week supervised clinical placement in a healthcare setting. The credential is a Post-Diploma Certificate delivered over two years, aimed at applicants already employed or credentialed in a related imaging discipline rather than as an entry point into diagnostic imaging.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a diploma and current credential in a related discipline, meeting one of four pathways: Medical Radiation Technologists (a current practice permit, membership with CAMRT, CMRITO or OTIMROEPMQ, and a diploma in medical radiology, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance or radiation therapy); Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (active membership with Sonography Canada and a diploma in diagnostic medical sonography); Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologists (a current ACCLXT practice permit and an accredited CLXT diploma); or internationally trained applicants with equivalent credentials and membership with CAMRT or Sonography Canada. All applicants must also submit a letter of recommendation from a physician, supervisor or department head, complete the MRI Applicant Screening Form, and provide proof of English Language Proficiency.
