The Industrial Mechanic Millwright programme trains registered apprentices to maintain and repair stationary industrial machinery, including mechanical equipment and automated and robotic systems. In-class instruction covers workshop practice, machine technology, rigging, welding, electrical controls, power transmission, and fluid power, building on skills apprentices apply on the job with their sponsoring employer. Northern College delivers the in-school portion at its Timmins Campus across three levels: Level 1 (8 weeks), Level 2 (8 weeks), and Level 3 (9 weeks). The full apprenticeship, combining this in-class training with employer-based on-the-job hours, totals 7,280 hours, of which 720 hours are in-class. Apprentices who complete all levels and the required on-the-job hours earn a Certificate of Apprenticeship and are prepared to challenge the interprovincial Red Seal examination in the Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) trade, qualifying them to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair stationary industrial machinery and automated systems in manufacturing, mining, and processing operations.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must be registered apprentices in the Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Apprenticeship Trade, sponsored by an employer and registered in the trade before enrolling in in-class training. Grade 12 or equivalent is required. Because entry is apprentice-based rather than a general direct-entry route, Northern College does not publish a separate minimum grade average or English-language test requirement for this programme.
