Marine Navigation Management Technology at Nova Scotia Community College is a one-year advanced diploma program that prepares graduates of the Marine Navigation Technology diploma, or certified Watchkeeping Mates, for management-level roles as ship navigation officers. Coursework builds on prior navigation training and sea experience, focusing on marine navigation, cargo handling and stowage, and ship operations and safety at the management level, with classroom, lab, and simulation training. Graduates find employment with shipping companies operating cargo ships, tankers, passenger ferries, and research and offshore supply vessels, and after accumulating further sea time can pursue the Transport Canada Chief Mate Certificate of Competency to serve as second in command of a vessel. Admission requires a Marine Navigation Technology diploma or a Transport Canada Watchkeeping Mate certificate with six months of service as an Officer of the Watch, plus a valid Transport Canada Marine Medical certificate.
