Early Childhood Education Certificate is a certificate in Education & Teaching programme offered by Okanagan College in Kelowna, Canada. The programme runs for 3 semesters, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 6,100 per total for local students.
This certificate prepares graduates to work with young children across a range of early learning and care settings, building the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to plan enriched programs in daycares, preschools and similar early-years initiatives that support healthy child development, working alongside families and the wider community. This three-semester program meets the ECE Registry's criteria needed to become credentialed to practice as an Early Childhood Educator at the basic level.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants only, per the College's program page.
Academic base: B.C. secondary-school graduation or the equivalent, or being 19 or older and out of secondary school for a year as of the first day of classes, plus English 12 at 60 per cent or an accepted alternative.
General requirements: a valid first aid certificate meeting Schedule C of the B.C. Child Care Licensing Regulation, held for the whole program; criminal record check clearance through the B.C. Criminal Records Review Program, started only when Admissions instructs you and returned by their deadline; and the completed ECE Program Information and Student Questionnaire form, which Admissions sends out.
Health and practicum notes: current immunisation is strongly advised because some child-care organisations require proof before a practicum placement. Applicants also look over the College's Requisite Skills and Abilities checklist for Health and Social Development, handing it in when the program starts, since students take part in hands-on simulated practice and in placements caring for young children. Travel costs to field trips, observation assignments and practicum sites are the student's own.
The College reserves the right to refuse admission where there is substantiated evidence, medical or otherwise, that admitting the applicant would put clients, agency staff or other students at risk.
