Overview
The Supported Access to Modified Education (SAME) Certificate is a part-time program at Okanagan College that gives students with diverse abilities access to modified versions of regular college programs or courses. Students work with the Assessment, Education and Training (AET) department to build an individualized plan of study drawn from existing Okanagan College courses, adapted to meet their learning needs, rather than following a fixed curriculum of new courses. Support is arranged in cooperation with instructors and support staff to help students participate meaningfully in their chosen courses. On successful completion, students receive an anecdotal grade report along with a modified certificate rather than a standard program credential. Admission requires documented evidence of a disability and, for applicants without prior BEST program completion, letters of recommendation addressing work habits and workplace suitability. Applications must be submitted well in advance of the intended start date through the AET instructor.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must provide documentation of a disability that prevents them from meeting the entry criteria for a regular Okanagan College program. Applicants who have not completed the BEST (Bridging to Employment, Skills and Training) program must submit two letters of recommendation: one from an instructor or teacher addressing attendance, ability to complete work, and interpersonal skills, and one from an employment agency, employer, or supervisor confirming suitability for the program based on workplace experience. Students must apply through the Assessment, Education and Training (AET) instructor at least eight months before the intended start date.
