The Early Childhood Education – Inclusive Child Care Certificate is a one-year program at Okanagan College that builds on existing early childhood education experience to prepare graduates to support young children with diverse abilities. It develops skills for creating inclusive, strength-based, and culturally responsive learning environments and meets the requirements of the BC Early Childhood Educator Registry for Special Needs Educator certification. The program runs as a Workplace Integrated Learning model aimed at students already employed in a licensed child care setting, combining scheduled online classes, held two evenings a week, with practicum experience completed within the Okanagan region. Admission requires prior completion of an ECE Certificate or a current BC ECE Registry Certificate to Practice, along with current First Aid certification and a clear criminal record check. Graduates are prepared to work as Special Needs Educators within licensed child care programs across British Columbia.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have satisfactorily completed an Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certificate program or hold a current BC ECE Registry Certificate to Practice; applicants who do not meet this requirement may be admitted with a written recommendation from the department if space is available. Current First Aid certification, including Child Safe and Infant CPR, and a clear criminal record check from the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General's Criminal Records Review Program are also required.
