This program leads to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology and Justice over four or five years, delivered in-class at the Downtown Oshawa campus, examining criminological and sociological explanations for why people commit crimes and how societies define crime and criminality. The interdisciplinary curriculum draws on criminology, sociology, philosophy, psychology and law, and considers crime, criminal justice and its administration through the principles of fairness, equity, peace and justice. Optional specializations include Criminal Justice, Victimology and Victim Studies, Global Crime and Justice, Youth, Crime and Justice, and Policing in Society. A direct-entry co-op option offers full-time, paid work terms throughout the degree. It suits students aiming at careers in policing, corrections, victim advocacy, criminal justice policy, or further study including law school or graduate criminology programs.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M courses, including English (ENG4U). Admission is competitive: last year's cut-off was 70 per cent and the expected cut-off sits in the low 70s, so meeting the minimums does not guarantee a seat. Applicants whose first language is not English must present, within two years of the intake, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, Duolingo English Test 120, PTE Academic 58, CAEL 70 with no band below 60, Cambridge English Advanced 180 with no band below 170, or Oxford ELLT 7, per the university's general admission requirements. The program begins each September and January.
