Mechanical and Materials Engineering is offered by the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering within Smith Engineering, leading to a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering. Students enter through Smith Engineering's common first-year program and are guaranteed a place in Mechanical Engineering at the end of year one. The curriculum builds a foundation in solid mechanics and dynamics, materials engineering, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer, followed by courses in machine design, manufacturing methods, and instrumentation and control. Upper-year technical electives cover topics such as computer-aided design, biomechanical device design, aerospace engineering, robotics, turbomachines, mechatronic systems design, advanced materials, and thermal systems design. After second year, students choose the general Mechanical Engineering option or the Materials or Biomechanical options. Hands-on learning takes place in a dedicated machine shop with CAD workstations and CNC machines, culminating in an industry-sponsored Capstone design project. Students may also complete a 12 to 16 month paid internship through the Queen's Undergraduate Internship Program, graduating with the Professional Internship designation.
