Overview
The Master of Environmental Studies (MES) at Queen's University, offered through the School of Environmental Studies, provides graduate-level training in environmental sustainability through an interdisciplinary approach to the long-term nature and impacts of environmental change. The program is offered in two formats: a Research-based Master's, which follows the traditional sequence of four half-credit courses culminating in an original-research thesis and formal defence over 24 months, and a Course-based Master's, which emphasizes conceptual, analytical, and interpretive skills through six half-credit courses and a library-based interdisciplinary project or paper over 16 to 20 months. Applicants are not required to hold a prior degree in environmental studies. The academic year begins in September, the normal date of admission, with January or May admission possible by request where a supervisor or advisor is arranged. Graduates pursue careers in environmental protection, conservation and natural resource management, sustainability education and policy, and related government, industry, and non-government roles.
