Overview
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen's University offers graduate study leading to a Master's or doctoral degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or Engineering Mathematics. Two Master's routes are available: a course-based option that can be completed in as little as 12 months and offers a fast track into doctoral research, and a thesis-based option that typically takes two years. Research strengths in the department span pure mathematics, including number theory, algebra, algebraic geometry, combinatorics, operator algebras, random matrix theory, and dynamical systems; engineering mathematics, including control theory, information theory, and communication systems; mathematical biology; and statistics and data science, spanning theoretical and applied statistics, statistical learning, and machine learning. Students work closely with faculty supervisors and are integrated into a research group, taking part in departmental seminars, workshops, and collaborations with researchers across campus. The department, housed in Jeffery Hall, has approximately 50 full-time graduate students, more than two-thirds of whom are doctoral candidates. Graduates have gone on to careers in academia, industry, government, and the non-profit sector.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics graduate programs must hold a minimum B+ standing in their previous studies, based on the grading scale of the degree-granting institution. Applicants to the M.Sc. program will normally hold a four-year Bachelor's degree (preferably Honours) or equivalent in Mathematics and/or Statistics or a related field. Applicants uncertain of their academic eligibility may send a transcript and a brief statement of research interests to the graduate assistant for review ahead of applying. The application deadline is January 15th; securing a faculty supervisor before applying is not required for the Master's program.
