Biology and Mathematics is a Special/Specialized field of study offered jointly by the Department of Biology and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, combining standard courses from both departments with a set of dedicated 'BioMath' courses that link the two disciplines together. The interdisciplinary structure is intended to build quantitative literacy applied to biological questions, such as the evolution of drug-resistant diseases, drawing on genetics, genomics, epidemiology, and population ecology, reflecting a broader need for quantitative literacy in academic, medical, and industry settings. Combined with sufficient electives to total 120 units, the BIMA-P plan leads to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree. Full plan requirements, including the specific Biology, Mathematics, and BioMath courses required, are set out in the Faculty of Arts and Science Calendar.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Queen's Faculty of Arts and Science admits science applicants under the Science admission category (QS), which covers Biology and Cognitive Sciences (QSB), Mathematics and Statistics (QSM) and Physical and Chemical Sciences (QSP) sub-groups — including plans such as Astrophysics, Chemistry, Earth Systems Science, Mathematical Physics, Physics & Astronomy, Biology-Mathematics, and the Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Geology, Environmental Life Sciences and Environmental Toxicology plans. Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U and Calculus and Vectors 4U are mandatory, plus two of Biology 4U, Chemistry 4U or Physics 4U chosen to match the intended plan's prerequisites, and two further courses at the 4U or 4M level. Recent admission cycles have required a low-80s overall average for this category. Applicants apply through the OUAC and submit official transcripts; applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not studied long enough in English, must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement. No supplementary application is required for general Science entry.
