Overview
Early Childhood Education – Workplace is a two-year diploma for early learning and childcare staff who continue working while they study, attending classes two full days per week and working at their childcare centre the other three days. The program integrates students' existing employment experience with coursework covering child-centred practice, play-based curriculum, child development, guidance techniques, communication skills, family relations, and professionalism. Admission requires current employment, with a minimum of six months full-time equivalent experience, in a licensed early learning and child-care centre, licensed family child-care home, or an approved alternate setting. Delivery varies by location: the Notre Dame Campus offers an accelerated in-person hybrid format, the Exchange District Campus offers in-person and hybrid options, several regional campuses offer online hybrid delivery, and Stonewall/Rockwood offers customized in-person training. Graduates are prepared to work as qualified early childhood educators in licensed child-care settings across Manitoba.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have graduated from or be enrolled in Grade 12, with one credit of Grade 12 English (40S); if enrolled, final grades showing successful completion are due by July 15 for fall entry or November 15 for a January start. Applicants must currently be employed, with a minimum of six months full-time equivalent experience, in a licensed early learning and childcare centre, licensed family childcare home, or an approved alternate setting, confirmed through an Employment Confirmation form, with at least 24 weeks of that employment completed by the July 15 or November 15 deadline. All applicants must complete either an Academic Communication Assessment or an approved English Language Assessment, dated within two years of application, with the pathway depending on whether the applicant completed three or more years of full-time secondary education in Canada, the United States, or an ELR-exempt country in English. Applicants must also submit a completed Applicant Declaration for Check Documents form, and criminal record and provincial child abuse registry checks are required after classes begin. Mature applicants aged 19 or older who have been out of high school for at least one year may qualify by completing or enrolling in Grade 12 English (40S) and meeting the remaining requirements.
