This two-year applied bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering is designed for students who already hold a technical diploma or degree and want to advance within the upstream petroleum sector, including gas process engineering and facilities design. The curriculum covers oil and gas exploration, drilling engineering, reservoir behaviour, production phases from wellbore to surface operations, facilities design and operation, upgrading and refining processes, and cost estimation and risk assessment tools. Students may select courses aligned with their career interests within the program. The program includes two work-integrated learning practicums totalling at least 750 hours of paid or unpaid work in the petroleum industry, concluding with a technical report. It is delivered in person at SAIT's Main Campus through the MacPhail School of Energy. Graduates may qualify for accreditation with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). The program accepts international applicants and is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a two-year SAIT diploma with a grade point average of 2.5 or better in Petroleum Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a similar engineering technology program, or a relevant science (mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, or geophysics) or engineering degree, with additional courses possibly required before starting. Applicants with other qualifications may be considered upon submission of certified background information, and registration in a Canadian Professional Engineering or Certified Technologist organization can be substituted for the WES or SAIT assessments, subject to academic chair approval. All applicants, including those educated in Canada, must demonstrate English language proficiency before admission (SAIT admissions, English Proficiency). SAIT's institution-wide scale accepts IELTS Academic at 6.0 in each skill, TOEFL iBT at a total score of 4.5 with a 4.5 minimum per section, PTE Academic at 53, the Duolingo English Test at 115 overall with 95 minimum per sub-score, and CAEL at 60 overall with 60 in each skill, among other accepted tests.
