Overview
The Dental Assisting certificate is a one-year, full-time program at SAIT's School of Health and Public Safety, delivered in a blended format combining in-person instruction and clinic work at Main Campus with online coursework. The curriculum covers dental imaging, laboratory procedures, infection control, and practice management, combining classroom theory with hands-on clinic experience and a required practicum placement in a dental office. Students are assigned practicum placements with consideration given to their location preference, though limited availability in Calgary may require some students to travel or relocate outside the city. Successful candidates typically need strong attention to detail, fine motor skills, and comfort working around human blood and tissue while wearing personal protective equipment for extended periods. The program accepts international applicants but is not eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). On completion, graduates receive a SAIT Dental Assisting certificate.

Admission Requirements: Applicants educated in Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and have passed Math 30-1 or 30-2, English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2, Biology 30, and Chemistry 30 (or equivalents) with an overall average of at least 60%; SAIT accepts high school course equivalents for applicants educated outside Alberta. Applicants educated outside of Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and provide an international document assessment confirming they meet the program's admission requirements. Beginning in the 2027/28 academic year, applicants must either meet current requirements or have completed SAIT's Pre-Health Sciences program, including CHEM 229.
