Overview
This eight-month certificate program prepares students to operate power generation and processing equipment, equivalent to a Fourth-Class Power Engineering credential. Coursework covers boiler design, operation and maintenance, heat and energy transfer, electrical fundamentals, pumps and compressors, instrumentation, internal combustion and steam/gas turbines, refrigeration systems, environmental conditioning and water treatment, combining classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory training on industry-standard equipment. The program is delivered in person at Main Campus and prepares graduates to challenge the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) Fourth Class Power Engineer certification exams. Graduates find employment in power generation, petrochemical, fertilizer, pulp and paper, natural gas processing, metallurgical, petroleum refining and food and beverage production industries, as well as facility operations, often involving shift work. Program graduates may transfer credits into SAIT's Power Engineering Technology diploma program to complete that credential with one additional year of study.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants educated in Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and complete the following courses or equivalents: at least 60% in Math 30-1, or 75% in Math 30-2 or Math 30-3; and at least 60% in English Language Arts 30-1, or 75% in English Language Arts 30-2. Applicants educated outside Alberta may meet requirements through SAIT-accepted high school course equivalents, and applicants educated outside of Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and provide an international document assessment confirming they meet the program's admission requirements.
