Overview
This two-year diploma prepares students for administrative roles in law offices and courthouses, with instruction from lawyers and former legal assistants. Coursework covers computer applications, legal writing, transcription, and office procedures, alongside an introduction to civil litigation, real estate, corporate law, criminal law, wills and estates, and family law. Students develop keyboarding and transcription skills using industry-standard software and learn the legal terminology needed to prepare accurate legal documents. The program concludes with a one-month unpaid practicum placement. Full-time study includes five courses per semester with about twenty classroom hours per week; part-time study is also available, with up to seven years allowed to complete all requirements. The program is delivered in person at SAIT's Main Campus. Graduates are prepared for roles such as legal assistant or court clerk, and may progress to paralegal work with experience.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants educated in Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and complete English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2 with a minimum of 50%, and Math 10C or Math 20-3 with a minimum of 50%, or equivalents; SAIT accepts high school course equivalents for applicants educated outside Alberta. Applicants educated outside Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and provide an international document assessment confirming they meet the program's admission requirements.
