Overview
Heavy Equipment and Truck and Transport is a 19-week, on-campus applied certificate from Saskatchewan Polytechnic's School of Transportation, based at the Saskatoon campus and also delivered off-campus at regional colleges and through Skills Training programming. The program gives hands-on experience working on bulldozers, cranes, graders, loaders, earthmovers, trucks, buses, and highway transport vehicles, combining trades training in both heavy equipment and truck-and-transport mechanics. Admission requires Grade 11 mathematics at the level of Foundations of Mathematics 20, Pre-Calculus 20, or Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 20, along with Saskatchewan Polytechnic's English language proficiency requirement; applicants without this prerequisite may qualify through the ACCUPLACER placement test or 15 approved post-secondary credits. Completion can provide a head start toward the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician apprenticeship and journeyperson certification, with a further pathway into the Bachelor of Applied Management degree for journeypersons. Graduates typically move into entry-level roles in construction, oil and gas, forestry, mining, and transportation.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 11 mathematics at the level of Foundations of Mathematics 20, Pre-Calculus 20, or Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 20. Applicants without this credential can qualify through the ACCUPLACER placement test, with minimum scores of 250 in Arithmetic, 243 in Reading, and 241 in Writing, or through 15 approved post-secondary credits. Saskatchewan Polytechnic's institution-wide English Language Requirement also applies: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with 5.0 per component, TOEFL iBT 81 overall with 19 per skill, PTE Academic 63 overall with 50 per component, Duolingo English Test 110, or CAEL 60 overall with 50 per component. Admission runs First Qualified/First Admitted, with applications opening September 1 each year.
