Overview

Heavy Equipment and Truck and Transport Technician is a 35-week, on-campus certificate from Saskatchewan Polytechnic delivered at the Saskatoon campus with an August intake. Training combines two mechanical trades: heavy equipment technicians service large mobile equipment such as bulldozers and cranes used in construction and mining, while truck and transport mechanics maintain trucks, buses, and highway vehicles for dealers and transportation companies. Coursework covers air conditioning and heating systems, brakes, steering and suspension, electrical and hydraulic systems, engines and fuel systems, equipment operation, trade math, shop equipment use, and welding, split roughly 60 percent shop time and 40 percent class time, plus a two-week industry-based work experience placement. Admission requires Grade 11 mathematics at the level of Foundations of Mathematics 20, Pre-Calculus 20, or Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 20, along with Saskatchewan Polytechnic's English language proficiency requirement; applicants without this prerequisite may qualify through the ACCUPLACER placement test. Graduates work as heavy equipment mechanics, diesel engine mechanics, or transport truck mechanics.
