Overview
Library and Information Technology is a two-year, 70-week diploma from Saskatchewan Polytechnic delivered as a full-time, face-to-face program at the Saskatoon campus, with a single intake every second year (even-numbered years only) in August. Developed in accordance with Canadian Library Association guidelines, the program prepares students to support librarians or manage day-to-day operations in a small library, covering acquisitions, circulation and interlibrary loans, archives and records management, computer-based and traditional library management, database searching and reference research, cataloguing, programming, public relations and reader assistance. Students also take introductory academic courses spanning subjects such as world history and literature alongside technical library coursework. Some Library Clerk applied-certificate courses may be taken part-time before admission, but students must be accepted into the diploma program to graduate and receive the credential. Admission follows Saskatchewan Polytechnic's First Qualified/First Admitted process, with applications opening September 1 each year.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 12 with a minimum grade of 60% in a 30-level English Language Arts course, plus Saskatchewan Polytechnic's English Language Requirement. Accepted applicants may be required to provide a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search, at their own expense, for work experience placements. Applicants without Grade 12 may qualify through the ACCUPLACER placement test, with minimum scores of 253 in Reading, 247 in Writing and 4 on the Writeplacer, or through 15 approved post-secondary credits. Admission follows the First Qualified/First Admitted process, with applications opening September 1 each year; the program has one intake every second year (even-numbered years only).
