Overview

The Contemporary Arts minor is offered by the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University and is open to Contemporary Arts students as well as students in any other SFU major. The minor balances practical studio work with theoretical study, combining lower-division studio coursework with upper-division seminars in art theory and history. It requires a minimum of 27 units: at least 12 lower-division Contemporary Arts units including one studio course, and at least 15 upper-division units including a minimum of three theory-and-history courses. Students typically enter the minor in the fall term, after contacting the School for the Contemporary Arts academic advisor in the preceding January. Not all courses are offered every term, and some run on a rotational basis; transfer credit does not automatically grant advanced standing and is assessed individually.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 2.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Students wishing to declare the Contemporary Arts minor must first complete six lower-division units of Contemporary Arts courses (in any combination), and must have a minimum Contemporary Arts grade point average of 2.5 and a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.0. Students normally enter the minor in the fall term and should contact the School for the Contemporary Arts academic advisor in January of the preceding year to apply once the prerequisite conditions are met.
