Overview

Creative Writing is a minor offered by the Department of English in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University. It lets students explore the theory and practice of creative writing across several forms, including poetry, fiction and screenwriting, along with aspects of the language and material production involved in publishing. The minor requires a minimum of 24 units, including at least 15 upper-division units, and must include ENGL 272 (Creative Reading), ENGL 372 (Poetry), ENGL 374 (Fiction) and ENGL 472W (Advanced Creative Writing), plus at least three further electives from a list of creative-writing and related courses. Before formal admission to the minor, students must complete a prerequisite first-year English course such as ENGL 111W (Literary Classics in English) or an approved equivalent. Courses are offered in both on-campus and online sections, and upper-division Creative Writing courses used for the minor cannot also be counted toward an English major or other English program.
