Religious Literacy is an undergraduate certificate offered by the Department of Global Humanities in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University. The program provides interdisciplinary study of religious thought and its influence on civilization, drawing courses from Global Humanities, History, Indigenous Studies, and related departments. Students may concentrate on a single religious tradition or pursue thematic study across multiple traditions and cultures. The certificate develops religious and cultural competency relevant to careers in social work, criminology, business, international affairs, cultural resource management, public policy, planning, education, counselling, psychology, nursing, medicine, and health sciences. Completion requires a total of 18 units: the two required courses HUM 130 (Introduction to Religious Studies) and HUM 330 (Religions in Context), plus 11 units of elective courses chosen from an approved list. The certificate is open to students pursuing any major or minor and to those without a bachelor's degree. Credits earned may also be applied toward a major or minor, though units used for this certificate cannot be applied to another SFU certificate or diploma. Up to 15 transfer units may be credited toward the program.
