Overview

The Computing Studies Certificate provides you with an opportunity to understand the fundamentals of computers and programming without necessarily specializing in computing science. You'll take have the option to take courses in This program provides both part-time and full-time students with an opportunity to understand the fundamentals of computers and programming without necessarily specializing in computing science. You'll also have the option to participate in a co-op program.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 2.40 / 4.33

Admission Requirements: Entry to Computing Science courses required for this certificate requires a grade of C- or better in each prerequisite course, specifically introductory computer science (CMPT 125, 126 or 135) and discrete mathematics (MACM 101) or their equivalents. A cumulative grade point average of 2.40 is required to take 200-, 300- and 400-division computing courses, and a 2.00 GPA is required on the CMPT courses used toward the certificate. Current SFU Computing Science students in a Major or Honours program, or a related joint program, may not apply to this certificate. The Calendar entry does not state a separate English-language test-score requirement or prior-credential condition for this certificate.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
