Computer Engineering is an option within Simon Fraser University's Engineering Science program, leading to a Bachelor of Applied Science degree, offered by the School of Engineering Science in the Faculty of Applied Sciences. The option combines software and hardware engineering, covering digital electronics, computer architecture, operating systems, intelligent systems and software engineering, and prepares graduates for systems-engineering work with computer and digital technologies across fields such as finance, environmental monitoring and automotive systems. The broader Engineering Science degree combines a core of pure, applied and engineering sciences with specialized study in the chosen option, and requires eight academic terms of coursework plus a minimum of three co-operative education work terms, at least two of which must be completed in industry. Entry to engineering science courses requires a grade of C- or better in each prerequisite course.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Direct-entry secondary-school applicants must present Physics 12, Mathematics 12, Chemistry 12 and English 12, with admission decided competitively against each term's admission average. Transfer applicants need a minimum of 24 units of transferable coursework, including at least one mathematics course (MATH 152 or MATH 232/240), one computing course (CMPT 128, or 135, or 125 and 127, or ENSC 151), and one physics course (PHYS 121/141, PHYS 221 or PHYS 321); admission is competitive. Current SFU students transferring internally need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 with at least 12 units completed at SFU in the preceding term, a competitive engineering-related GPA (typically around 2.8), at least three qualifying mathematics/computing/physics courses, and no more than five repeated courses. A grade of C- or better is required in each prerequisite course to enrol in engineering science courses.
