Offered by Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada, Resource and Environmental Management: Master of Resource Management (MRM) is a master's degree in Forestry & Natural Resources programme. The programme is delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition for international students is CAD 2,150 per semester (CAD 2,150 per semester for local students).
This MRM offers a choice between a project stream — five to seven terms, eleven courses, and an original research project submitted to the SFU Library — and a thesis stream, which trades coursework for seven courses plus a more extensive independent thesis defended over six to nine terms. The program targets recent graduates and working professionals from disciplines as varied as biology, engineering, forestry, geology, business, economics, and geography, all pursuing careers in resource and environmental decision-making. Coursework builds interdisciplinary competence across the ecological, economic, social, and institutional sides of resource management, with an optional co-op placement and some courses scheduled in evenings or week-long blocks to accommodate working students.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: This program follows Simon Fraser University's general graduate admission requirements: the Resource and Environmental Management (REM) graduate admissions page sets out application steps rather than a numeric floor of its own, so the university-wide standard applies. Under that standard, applicants need a bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0/4.33 (B), or 3.33/4.33 (B+) on the last 60 credits of undergraduate coursework, plus SFU's graduate English-language proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each band, or an equivalent score on TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, CAEL or Duolingo. REM's own page adds programme-specific conditions: a completed undergraduate course in parametric and nonparametric statistics covering distributions, statistical inference, t-tests, ANOVA, chi-square tests and simple linear regression; unofficial transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended, including exchange semesters; and a carefully written Statement of Interest describing the applicant's academic background, research interests and the resource-management project they wish to pursue, with no strict word limit but succinct writing valued. The MRM Thesis stream applies the same criteria and deadlines as the Project and Planning stream.
