Overview
Marketed as the only accredited planning program in Canada built around interdisciplinary natural-resource and environmental planning, this MRM stream pairs eleven courses with an original research project over five to seven terms. Nine required courses cover professional planning practice, applied ecology, ecological economics, climate change, environmental law, community planning, public engagement, and policy analysis, rounded out by one specialization elective. A mandatory field workshop exposes students to real resource-management issues before they complete a 50-to-60-page research report, professionally accredited through the Planning Standards Board and the Planning Institute of British Columbia, with strong potential for publication through the SFU Library.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the School of Resource and Environmental Management must have completed an undergraduate course in parametric and nonparametric statistics, covering distribution description, basic inferential tests such as t-tests, ANOVA and chi-square, and simple linear regression and correlation. The program is intended for applicants with undergraduate training or work experience in fields such as biology, engineering, statistics, chemistry, forestry, geology, business administration, economics, geography, planning, or another social science, though these are described as suggested backgrounds rather than fixed prerequisites. A Statement of Interest and transcripts from all institutions attended are required, along with confirmation of the statistics prerequisite. Non-native English speakers whose education was not conducted in English must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores meeting the standard set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies (IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, 6.0 per section, or TOEFL 90 overall, 20 per section); no MRM-specific score is published.
