Overview

Media Studies at Trent University (Bachelor of Arts, General) takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding media practices and their effects. Coursework draws on Cultural Studies, Anthropology, Philosophy, Computer Science, Canadian Studies, and Sociology, with a focus on the ethical, theoretical, and technical questions raised by the interaction between humans and technology. Students examine how media shape and are shaped by culture, communication, and society, combining critical analysis of media systems with technical understanding of the tools that produce them. Students may not graduate with both a degree in Media Studies and a Cultural Studies Specialization in Film & Media, since the two overlap substantially. As a General credential, the program is completed alongside Trent's standard undergraduate degree requirements, and can be paired with electives from any of its contributing disciplines.
