Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems is a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) program offered by the Trent School of the Environment. It examines the environmental, social, and ethical consequences of conventional agriculture, including investment in industrial crops grown for fuel and materials, ongoing risks to food security and human health, and the demand for local food production within the context of global food trade. The curriculum also covers cultural and social critiques of the food system, including animal rights advocacy, urban agriculture, regenerative farming practices, and First Nations agricultural practices. Because the program is designed for interdisciplinary study, students take courses from several departments, spanning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science version of the degree, with Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems courses that fulfil BSc science requirements marked accordingly. Graduates are equipped to contribute to discussions on food-system sustainability, to help create positive change in the agri-food system, and to pursue diverse employment across agriculture and food sectors. Students may also apply to Trent's Accelerated Master's program in Environmental & Life Sciences to complete a research-based MSc in a shortened timeframe.
