The Doctorate in Health Sciences Research (Ph.D.) at Universite de Sherbrooke is a 90-credit doctoral programme focused on research involving human subjects in preventive, evaluative and curative health sciences. It is offered without a concentration or with a concentration in addictions, epidemiology, health sciences pedagogy, community health, digital health or nursing sciences (the rehabilitation concentration is currently suspended for new admissions). The programme is delivered from the Sherbrooke main and health campuses and jointly from Longueuil, Saguenay and Moncton, with admission in fall, winter and summer terms. Students develop skills in critical literature analysis, quantitative, qualitative and mixed research design, and data analysis and interpretation while completing a major clinical, epidemiological, evaluative or exploratory research project under faculty supervision. Applicants must secure a supervisor able to direct research in the relevant concentration before applying, and, depending on the concentration, may need specific prior training such as coursework in health informatics or nursing.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.3
Admission Requirements: A master's degree in health sciences or an appropriate related discipline, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.3 scale for research-type master's holders (3.3 on 4.3 for candidates from a coursework or disciplinary master's, who also undergo a research-skills assessment and may need preparatory research training). Candidates must propose a research project and secure a qualified faculty supervisor, meeting any additional requirements of the chosen concentration (for example, prior university training in nursing for the nursing sciences concentration, or a combined health-sciences and computing-or-mathematics background for the digital health concentration; the rehabilitation concentration is not currently accepting admissions). Functional understanding of spoken and written French is required; candidates whose prior studies were entirely in another language must reach level C1 (500/699 or higher) in oral and written comprehension on a recognized test. English is not a formal admission requirement, but good reading comprehension is recommended since course materials and research literature are frequently available only in English.
