This 30-credit certificate trains early-childhood professionals for pedagogical-support roles in childcare services, offered at the Montreal, Laval, and Longueuil campuses on a part-time basis only, with all courses held evenings and weekends to accommodate working students, and fall and winter admission. Twenty-four required credits and six elective credits cover pedagogical support practice, the role of families in early-childhood settings, the foundations of early-childhood education, childcare-related law and regulation, and a capstone integration activity that consolidates learning from across the program. Because entry generally requires prior recognized early-childhood training and relevant work experience, the certificate is designed for people already active in the childcare field rather than as a first entry point. The program prepares graduates to take on the role and responsibilities of pedagogical support within childcare centres or coordinating offices, supporting educators and improving the quality of pedagogical practice in Quebec-recognized childcare services.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Direct entry is via a DEC in childcare or early-childhood education techniques plus at least six months of full-time relevant experience, or the equivalent 832 part-time hours, in a Quebec-recognized childcare service. Applicants with relevant experience may qualify at age 21 or older with Ministry-recognized early-childhood training plus the same minimum relevant experience. Those with prior university study need 15 university credits completed with a minimum average of 2.5/4.3, plus Ministry-recognized training and the same minimum relevant experience. Candidates with a diploma from outside Quebec need at least 13 years of schooling plus Ministry-recognized training and the required experience, with international early-childhood diplomas subject to program-director equivalency review. French proficiency is required through the DEC's mandatory provincial French exam, the government French written test, or UQAM's own French test, with exemptions for holders of francophone university degrees; those failing UQAM's test must complete a remedial course before reaching 50% program completion. Admission is offered in the fall and winter trimesters.
