Overview
The Doctorate in Sociology (Doctorat en sociologie) at Université du Québec à Montréal trains researchers in sociology through a multidisciplinary and critical approach that fosters intellectual autonomy and the exploration of new research fields. The programme comprises 90 credits: 12 credits of required coursework and 78 credits of research, including an 18-credit thesis proposal and a 60-credit thesis. It is designed to be completed in four years of full-time study, or six years part-time, with courses offered during the day and in the evening. Admission is offered in the fall and winter terms. Applicants must hold a master's degree in sociology or a related discipline, completed with a minimum cumulative average of 3.2 on a 4.3 scale; files between 3.0 and 3.2 may be submitted to the admissions committee for review. Candidates from other disciplines may be required to complete qualifying coursework. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient command of French, including a minimum level on a recognized French test for external candidates, and knowledge of English is also required.
