This program prepares students for preschool and elementary education, leading to a Baccalauréat en éducation (Bachelor of Education). Offered full-time over 120 credits across 10 sessions at the Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d'Or and Mont-Laurier campuses, it provides foundational training in pedagogy, child development, and subject-specific didactics covering language arts, mathematics, science and technology, and social studies, guided by Quebec's Reference Framework for Professional Competencies (Ministère de l'Éducation, 2020). Students complete progressive practicums that build from classroom observation to full teaching responsibility, developing skills in classroom management, learning evaluation, and differentiated instruction. The program addresses teaching in both single-grade and multiple-grade classrooms. Admission includes a diagnostic test of French-language competency, and successful completion of the TECFÉE French-language test is a graduation requirement. Graduates are qualified to teach at the preschool and elementary levels and receive a teaching certificate following a favourable recommendation from the university.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Under the collegial route, applicants must hold a Diploma of Collegial Studies (DCS) or equivalent and may be required to attend an interview. Under the experience route, applicants must be at least 21 years old with at least six months of full-time (or equivalent) relevant, certified experience in an educational institution, supported by an interview, proof of experience, and a written statement of motivation; if the experience is insufficient, the applicant may first be admitted as an independent student ('libre 9924') for select courses while maintaining a 2.5/4.3 average, before reapplying to the full program. All applicants must demonstrate French proficiency per UQAT's institutional policy, take a diagnostic language-skills test at their first session, and pass the TECFÉE French-language test as a condition of graduation. A declaration of criminal record is required for practicum placement and teaching certification purposes.
