This program prepares students for careers in preschool and elementary education, leading to a Baccalauréat en éducation (Bachelor of Education). It is delivered in English at UQAT's Val-d'Or campus and is offered exclusively to Indigenous students, in partnership with their home community. The 120-credit curriculum, structured over 10 sessions, combines coursework in child development, pedagogy, and subject-specific didactics (mathematics, written and oral language, science and technology, social studies, visual arts) with four supervised practicums that progress from classroom observation to full teaching responsibility. Students take required English-language courses (grammar, writing, oral communication) and must pass the English Exam for Teacher Certification (EETC), administered twice yearly at the Val-d'Or campus, to graduate. Graduates are qualified to teach single-grade and multi-grade classes at the preschool and elementary levels and receive a teaching certificate following a favourable recommendation from the university.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission follows two routes. Under the collegial route, applicants must hold a Diploma of Collegial Studies (DCS), general or vocational, or the equivalent, and may be required to attend an interview. Under the experience route, applicants must be at least 21 years old with at least six months of relevant, certified full-time work experience (or equivalent) in an educational institution; they must attend an interview, submit proof of experience, and write a statement of motivation. Applicants with insufficient relevant experience may first be admitted as an independent student ('9924 libre') for select courses, maintaining a 2.5/4.3 average, before applying to the full program. All applicants must take a diagnostic English test at the start of the program and pass the EETC (English Exam for Teacher Certification) to graduate. The program is offered in English to Indigenous students only and requires prior agreement with the student's community.
