Development of Teaching Practice in Northern Communities Certificate

The Certificate in Development of Teaching Practice in Northern Communities is a 30-credit UQAT certificate that improves the professional practice of teachers and other education staff working in Inuit schools in Nunavik. It develops two kinds of competencies: subject-specific knowledge for disciplines taught in Inuktitut, and the skills to create or adapt teaching methods and materials for Inuktitut-medium instruction, with pupil learning progression as the guiding focus. Required courses cover first-language learning difficulties, teaching rational numbers and probability, science and technology, Inuit history in relation to the contemporary world, Inuktitut orthography and morphology, and an educational training project, alongside a nine-credit practicum consolidating teaching proficiency in an Inuit context. Students also choose one elective from courses on leadership and ethics in an Inuit context, academic methodology, a professional development project, a special subject, teaching plastic creation, or English or French as a second language. Classified under the Education sector, completion may support, with a favourable recommendation, an authorization to teach in northern communities.
