Biological Chemistry examines the chemical processes of and relating to living organisms, combining a core of chemistry with required biology and biochemistry courses. Offered as an Honours Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto Mississauga (Specialist, Department of Chemical & Physical Sciences) and the St. George campus, the program uses synthetic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry alongside the tools of molecular biology to study nature at the molecular level, giving students the context to understand the chemical reactions and interactions in biological processes and how chemical strategies can be used to control them. At UTM, the Specialist Program (ERSPE1995) progresses from first-year chemistry, mathematics, and physics, through second-year organic and analytical chemistry and biology, to third-year physical and inorganic chemistry, and concludes with a fourth-year research or internship course such as CHM399Y5, CPS400Y5, or CPS489Y5. Graduates are prepared for careers in the biotechnology, biomedical, and pharmaceutical sectors, as well as research and teaching in chemistry and biology.
