Animal Physiology is a Major program in the Department of Cell and Systems Biology, Faculty of Arts & Science, at the University of Toronto St. George campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Science. Students compare and contrast the physiological systems of different animal species, or of a single species under different environmental conditions, using a systems-level approach that examines how emergent properties arise when physiological components operate as a whole. The Major requires 8.0 credits: an introductory year of biology, chemistry, and mathematics or physics, followed by core courses in cellular and systems physiology, at least 1.5 credits of advanced electives with 0.5 at the 300-level or higher, and a 0.5-credit 400-level course drawn from specialized physiology offerings. Students may apply after Year 1 or Year 2 for the Arts & Science Internship Program, a work-integrated learning stream that adds a paid research or industry placement to the degree. The program prepares graduates for further study or careers in physiology, biomedical research, and related life-science fields.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six subjects at the 4U/M level, including English (ENG4U/EAE4U). Required Grade 12 courses: Biology (SBI4U), Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U), and Chemistry (SCH4U); Physics (SPH4U) is recommended. The co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not used for admission. This is an open-enrolment program: students may enrol after completing 4.0 credits.
