Biological Physics is a Specialist program offered jointly by the Departments of Physics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Immunology, and Physiology in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto St. George campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Science. The program focuses on the physical principles underlying the organization of complex biological systems, covering problems at the interface of physics, molecular biology, and physiology across scales from the molecular to the organismic. All students take a shared core of physics, mathematics, biology, biochemistry, and chemistry courses, including specialized biological-physics courses (PHY331H1, PHY431H1) and a third-year laboratory course from one of the partner departments, then choose between a Physiology Stream or an Advanced Physics Stream; the Physiology Stream requires 14.5 credits in total, including PSL300H1, PSL301H1, and additional physiology credits, plus at least one inquiry-based research or project course. Students may apply after Year 1 or Year 2 for the Arts & Science Internship Program work-integrated learning stream. The program prepares graduates for further study or research careers spanning physics, biophysics, and the life sciences.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six subjects at the 4U/M level, including English (ENG4U/EAE4U). Required Grade 12 courses: Biology (SBI4U), Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U), and Physics (SPH4U). The co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not used for admission.
