Program details
Overview
The Software Engineering major at the University of Guelph focuses on collaborative software development, design methodologies, professional standards and project management. Students choose from four Areas of Emphasis -- Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science and User Experience -- allowing coursework to align with in-demand technology sectors. The program is not accredited toward Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure, reflecting its emphasis on programming breadth and diversification rather than traditional engineering practice. A five-year co-op option is available, incorporating five paid work terms with employers across the technology sector. Graduates pursue roles such as software developer, game programmer, mobile application developer, web infrastructure developer, systems architect, cloud developer and security analyst. The program reports strong co-op employment outcomes, with 95 percent of Software Engineering co-op students finding employment in a recent term. Combining technical instruction with hands-on project work, the major prepares students for careers in software design, development and systems architecture across a range of industries.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Software Engineering major follows the University of Guelph's general Ontario Secondary School admission process: an applicant's admission average is calculated from their top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including any courses required for the program (or, where 4U/M courses are unavailable, a combination of top six completed or in-progress 4U/M and completed 3U/M courses). Cut-offs are determined by the quality and quantity of applications received and the space available in the program; published estimated cut-off ranges are a guide only and do not guarantee an offer of admission.
