This part-time certificate teaches the industry standards and practices used to create, organize, secure, archive, and track both paper and electronic records so organizations can retrieve documents efficiently and stay compliant with legal requirements. The program consists of eight courses plus a mandatory two-week practicum, and can be completed over one to three years; courses are offered across fall, winter, and spring intakes, run once or twice a year, carry no prerequisites, and can be taken in any order. All coursework is delivered fully online with no scheduled meeting times, while the practicum takes place in person at an assigned work site — UFV arranges placements for students in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland, but students located elsewhere must find and propose their own site. UFV directs applicants to its Academic Calendar for entrance requirements. The certificate suits people aiming for records management careers in healthcare, government, legal firms, banking, and other organizations that need staff able to manage large volumes of documents under formal retention and access rules, and who want a flexible online-first study format.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UFV's Academic Calendar sets out the Records Management Certificate's entrance requirements: applicants must have B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, or be at least 19 years old before their first day of classes, and must meet UFV's Entry-level English language proficiency requirement. That Entry-level standard is satisfied by an IELTS Academic overall score of 6.0 with no band below 5.5, a TOEFL iBT score of 80 with no section below 19, PTE Academic 56 with 52 or higher in Writing, CAEL 60+, MELAB 80+, CanTEST 4.0 overall, or a Duolingo English Test score of 100-109. The program page adds that its own courses carry no further prerequisites, though all courses must be completed before a student qualifies for the practicum. Applicants can apply at any time and are considered for the next available intake, with courses starting in Fall, Winter or Spring (September, January and May).
Application Details
Start Date:September, January and May
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
