Overview

Music: Composition (Classical) is a four-year Bachelor of Music program offered by the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto's St. George campus. Students learn to write music in the Western art music tradition for instruments and voices in solo, small-ensemble, and large-ensemble contexts, studying compositional technique and notation practices alongside orchestration, counterpoint, songwriting, and specialized instrumental writing, as well as electronic and computer music and composing for film and media. The program combines a core curriculum of music history and culture, music theory, musical skills, and keyboard harmony with individual composition instruction. Entry is available directly in Year 1, which requires a portfolio submission at the time of application, or after an Exploratory Year in Year 2, which requires a portfolio and an interview. Successful applicants demonstrate knowledge of contemporary classical repertoire, including works by living composers, along with strong ear training and music theory skills. Admission also requires the University of Toronto Classical Entrance Theory Exam, in addition to standard academic admission requirements. Graduates pursue careers as composers, arrangers, and further study at the graduate level.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12 U/M courses including ENG4U/EAE4U (the co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not used for admission purposes). Direct-entry applicants (Year 1) submit a composition portfolio at the time of application; Year 2 entry (after an Exploratory Year) requires a portfolio and an interview, with successful applicants demonstrating knowledge of contemporary classical repertoire, strong ear training, and a strong understanding of music theory. Applicants must meet both academic admission requirements and music admission requirements: an audition on the applicant's major instrument, at least one faculty interview, and a minimum score of 60% on the University of Toronto Classical Entrance Theory Exam.
