Overview

Environmental Chemistry is a Bachelor of Science (Honours) specialization (Plan Code ECHM-S) administered by the School of Environmental Studies in partnership with the Department of Chemistry. The plan consists of 102.00 core and option units, combined with electives to a minimum of 120.00 units. Core science courses cover general chemistry, physical geography, introductory geology, and calculus, followed by a sequence of chemistry courses including main group chemistry, chemical reactivity, chemical analysis, materials and interfaces, structure determination, organic reactions, mechanistic organic chemistry, transition metal chemistry, biological chemistry, and environmental and green chemistry, together with instrumental chemical analysis, experimental chemistry, and a research project. Students also complete sustainability courses in environment and sustainability, principles of sustainability, and applications of sustainability. Option units are chosen from environmental science, geology, and biology course lists, plus an interdisciplinary humanities course. The plan may not be combined with a Chemistry Minor. It leads to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Queen's Faculty of Arts and Science admits science applicants under the Science admission category (QS), which covers Biology and Cognitive Sciences (QSB), Mathematics and Statistics (QSM) and Physical and Chemical Sciences (QSP) sub-groups — including plans such as Astrophysics, Chemistry, Earth Systems Science, Mathematical Physics, Physics & Astronomy, Biology-Mathematics, and the Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Geology, Environmental Life Sciences and Environmental Toxicology plans. Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U and Calculus and Vectors 4U are mandatory, plus two of Biology 4U, Chemistry 4U or Physics 4U chosen to match the intended plan's prerequisites, and two further courses at the 4U or 4M level. Recent admission cycles have required a low-80s overall average for this category. Applicants apply through the OUAC and submit official transcripts; applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not studied long enough in English, must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement. No supplementary application is required for general Science entry.
