Environmental Ethics is offered at the University of Toronto St. George campus, jointly sponsored by the School of the Environment and the Department of Philosophy, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Arts. The program is available as a Major or a Minor and explores how value judgments and worldviews affect environmental decision making, combining philosophy coursework on the ethics of animal welfare, duties to future generations, and sustainable development with School of the Environment courses on environmental problems and policy. The Major requires 6.0 credits built around four foundational courses (ENV221H1, ENV222H1, PHL273H1, JGE321H1), a further credit from PHL373H1, ENV333H1, or JGE331H1, a half-credit practicum or research course, and additional applications credits. The Minor requires 4.0 credits, including PHL273H1, one of PHL373H1/ENV333H1/JGE321H1/JGE331H1, ENV221H1, ENV222H1, plus 2.0 further Philosophy credits. Both are open-enrolment: a student who has completed 4.0 credits may enrol. Graduates gain a grounding in ethical reasoning applicable to environmental policy, advocacy, and further study.
