Overview
The Bachelor of Science, Major in Computer Science, is designed to meet the training and educational requirements outlined by CIPS (Canadian Information Processing Society), ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). These requirements reflect the needs of the computing industry, both nationally and internationally. The program is composed of courses drawn from the systems, theoretical and business application domains. It is designed to train you in applied computer science and educate them in the social, ethical and legal implications of computer science.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: You must first be eligible for VIU's Bachelor of Science before you can apply for the Computer Science major, which admits into years one, two and three.
First-year entry: general admission requirements, a minimum "C" in English 12 or equivalent, and a minimum "B" in Pre-Calculus 12 or Principles of Mathematics 12.
Second-year entry: at least 24 university credits towards the BSc Computer Science major, including MATH 123 and CSCI 161 with a minimum "C" in each. Competitive averages are calculated across all programme-required MATH and CSCI courses.
Third-year entry: at least 54 university credits towards the major, including CSCI 260 and CSCI 265 with a minimum "C" in each, or a recognised two-year Computer Science diploma that normally includes the Degree English Requirement. Competitive averages again use all programme-required MATH and CSCI courses.
Transfer applicants entering second or third year must have completed MATH 121, 122 and 123 and CSCI 160 and 161 with a minimum GPA of 2.33 ("C+") across all programme-required MATH and CSCI courses.
Enrolment is limited: applicants are ranked by overall GPA, higher grades are considered first, a waitlist is created where needed, and meeting the minimums does not guarantee a seat. Indigenous applicants may apply for reserved seats through the Access Initiative for Indigenous Students form.
